Marks & Spencer has apologised after a Muslim member of staff refused to sell a customer alcohol - and says the employee should have been placed in a "suitable role".
Yesterday the retailer revealed that some workers are excused from serving booze and pork on account of their religious beliefs, in contrast to supermarket giants such as Sainsbury's.
Today M&S clarified the situation, explaining that the staff member in question should have been assigned to a till where they would be handling clothes, cakes or other such goods.
A spokeswoman for the firm said: "We regret that in the case highlighted we were not following our own internal policy.
